Harelaw Farm was the perfect backdrop for Aimee & Ryan’s wild DIY festival wedding.
Aimee & Ryan reminisce:
What first attracted you to your wedding venue and what made you decide that it would be perfect for your special day?
We always wanted a barn-style venue where we had the freedom to add personal touches throughout. The moment we visited Harelaw Farm and met the team, we knew it was the one. We loved the rustic charm, the variety of spaces across the three barns, and the little details from its farming past that gave it real character. The beautiful on-site farmhouse was a huge bonus – it meant we could have our whole wedding party stay with us the night before and after the big day.
Can you tell me about your theme if you had one, the inspiration behind it and how you incorporated it into your wedding?
Our theme was retro vintage disco – colourful, eclectic, and a bit wild! Ryan was inspired by the DIY vibes of festivals like Kelburn and Lost Village, and we fully embraced a ‘no idea is too wacky’ mindset.
We hunted through charity shops, vintage stores, and car boot sales across Scotland, collecting quirky finds. The venue was filled with vintage lampshades and disco balls (including some hanging from a ladder above the top table), a ceremony backdrop of 1,000 origami cranes, and nearly 200 unique vintage vases on tables.
Our florist, Megan Tewnion-Brown, tied it all together with bold, vibrant flowers and even added Aimee’s favourite herbs to her bouquet.
How did your venue go above and beyond in ensuring everything was perfect on the day?
The Harelaw team were incredible – both in the lead-up to and on the day itself. Our coordinators, Nicole and Megan, handled Groomzilla’s wild ideas (including his demand for a specific beer on tap!) with patience and humour.
The team helped us set up a van-load of decorations, with Ian the handyman going above and beyond – crafting brackets to hang ladders from the ceiling, chairs on walls, and disco balls everywhere. We were totally looked after in the farmhouse, from delicious breakfasts to having staff on hand for anything we needed.
Everything ran so smoothly, if anything did go wrong, we never knew! We truly felt like part of the Harelaw family – the team are just the loveliest people and clearly love what they do.
Who was your chosen Photographer and why did you choose them?
We chose Samantha at Madhouse Weddings. We wanted mostly natural, candid shots rather than anything too posed, and her work was exactly what we were looking for. The photos are incredible – they capture all the colour, fun, and energy of the day perfectly.
If you could pick one word to describe your wedding, what would it be and why?
FUN! We were smiling and laughing from start to finish. Our celebrant, Paul Browett, had everyone in stitches during the ceremony, setting the perfect tone for the rest of the day. The speeches were full of funny stories, and our friends and family brought their A-game – especially on the dance floor, where some very questionable moves were thrown down to disco classics from our band, The Riffreshers.
